Following the lunch break, scouts headed back out to cover the rest of our assigned territory.  Meanwhile, a crew of Troop 868 and Pack 868 parents remained behind at the Community Center to count, sort, and re-pack the donated food for transport to the food pantry.

For 2009, Troop 868 and their partnering units took the collected food to the food pantry program operated by First Baptist Church in Shepherdsville.  Since the Multipurpose Community Action Agency terminated their emergency food program, the pantry at First Baptist Church stepped up to meet the need and is now the primary food relief program for Shepherdsville and the surrounding communities of Brooks, Nichols, and Lebanon Junction.  Many donors really like the idea that their contributions go to help families in the local area.

Thanks to the generosity of the community and the scouts' hard work, we collected just over 4,600 pounds of food, an increase of roughly 20% over 2008.

Some Pack 868 Cub Scouts chowing down on pizza. The smile on Michael's face tells the story --- community service is hard work but it's still a lot of fun!
Tyler and Adam both seem to be doing well with collections on this street in a neighborhood off Cedar Grove Road. Jelani carries some donations he has collected to the back door of the troop bus.
Spencer and Toby cross the street to continue collecting on the other side. Troop 868 and Pack 868 parents counted and sorted the donated food at the Shepherdsville Community Center.
Back at the Community Center, the food was unloaded and carried inside for counting and sorting. Pack 848 Cubmaster Billy Thompson and Troop 868 Assistant Scoutmaster Waldo Guzman passed the food out the bus door.
Troop 868 scouts Preston and Adam with Assistant Scoutmaster Jeff Hagerman.  Pack 868 Cubmaster Steven Frank with Den Chief Drew and several Pack 868 Cub Scouts.
Assistant Scoutmaster Stephen Guelda and Life Scout Chris help carry food down the steps at First Baptist Church. Troop 868 scout Tyler struggles with a large box of canned goods.
Spencer made one of many trips down the steps to the food pantry. We even got some work out of Assistant Scoutmaster Jeff Hagerman!
