We spent most of our day at Gettysburg touring the famous battlefield, reading historical markers, and visiting some of the monuments. For dinner Tuesday night we drove to nearby Fairfield, PA and attended the Civil War Dinner Theatre show at the Fairfield Inn. Confederate Generals Robert E. Lee and Jeb Stuart dined together at this establishment during the Confederate retreat from Gettysburg. Probably unknown to them was that the Inn was also a stop on the Underground Railroad! During an outstanding dinner we were entertained by "Professor" Kerrigan, a professional magician and storyteller. Several of the scouts later named this as one of the most enjoyable things we did on the whole trip.
On Wednesday morning we departed Gettysburg and headed for Philadelphia by way of West Chester. In West Chester we stopped to see the American Helicopter Museum that featured more than 30 different helicopters ranging from small, experimental models to military prototypes. Many of the copters on display were "hands-on" meaning that scouts were allowed to climb inside and work the controls to their heart's delight. Our tour started off with a couple of short films and a live talk about the physics involved in rotary wing aircraft.
