CAMP ROTARY (January 2009)

It has long been a Troop 868 tradition to invite Webelos from all area Cub Scout Packs to go winter "cabin camping" with us during the month of January.  The destination for this year's trip was Rotary Scout Reservation (aka Camp Rotary) near Glasgow, KY.

Troop 868 Boy Scouts along with Webelos from 3 different Cub Scout packs arrived at the camp shortly before 9 PM Friday night and moved into the recently remodeled "Upper Cabin."  This building is an authentic log cabin that dates back to the 1930's.  It has seen more than its share of "wear and tear" over the years and had fallen into a state of disrepair.  But a major remodeling involved removal of the old roof and extending the walls upward to create a much roomier cabin complete with a second level sleeping loft.  Insulation was added, new windows and a wood stove were installed, and a covered back porch was fully enclosed to create a kitchen complete with a refrigerator and an electric stove.  The entire cabin was rewired and an impressive outdoor stone fireplace was added to a side porch.  Improvements had also been made to the bath house, several smaller "staff cabins," and the camp's council ring since our last visit.

The weekend program included instruction for the Webelos in firebuilding, orienteering, first aid, cooking, and how to conduct an outdoor flag ceremony.  Saturday afternoon included an orientation course that evolved into a 4-hour nature hike.  And, of course, we took a much shorter "night hike" by flashlight on Saturday evening.  Sunday morning included an in-camp worship service.  The Webelos got to experience winter camping Boy Scout style as well as complete several advancement requirements for various Webelos Activity Pins.

Even though the temperature only rose above freezing for a couple of hours on Saturday afternoon, everyone managed to stay comfortable and had a great time.  The outing was a huge success.

Webelos Cub Scouts Christopher, Spencer, Scott, Conor, and Chase with Boy Scout Jon. Webelos Conor (Pack 848) and Austin (Pack 868) enjoyed the view from one of the top bunks.
On Saturday morning, Scoutmaster Bob Meek instructed the boys about firebuilding. And soon the guys had two good fires going in the shepherd's stoves.
The Webelos learned first hand that cooking for a large group typically involves a good deal of teamwork. Before long, breakfast was ready.  Facing the camera (L to R) are Preston and Conor (Pack 848) and Boy Scout Connor.
During breakfast, Scoutmaster Meek points out something that seems to grab everyone's attention. Whatever it was, everyone seems to have gotten a good laugh out of it!
After breakfast, it was time for some "team building" exercises.  (L to R) Preston, Conor, Adam, Chris, Spencer, Scott, & Austin. Chris, Spencer, and Austin all look a bit chilly, but "eskimo" Scott looks warm and toasty.  Must be electric socks?
Meanwhile, back at the cabin, it appears that Stephen drew KP duty and has a rather challenging griddle to clean. Boy Scouts Adam, Stephen, and Connor and Pack 848 parent Patrick McClure join the Webelos in one of the games.
