(Derby Weekend)

Kentucky Derby weekend (the Derby is always the first Saturday in May) is when customers come to pickup plants at the troop's annual Plant Sale.  Scouts started taking orders in early January and sold through the month of March.  All of the plants Troop 868 sells are grown for us by a local greenhouse.  This guarantees that our customers always get fresh, top-quality plants and is the reason that we have a huge number of repeat customers who buy from us every year.  We want every customer to be a satisfied customer.

In 2011, the Sunday of Derby weekend also happened to be Mothers' Day, so in addition to running our normal pickup operation from indoors at the Community Center, we also set up shop in the parking lot at the Shepherdsville Square Shopping Center.  In the early years, based all operations in the parking lot, but had moved things to the Community Center for the past several years.  Going back to the parking lot for public selling worked out really well and is something that we'll probably continue.

Colorful hanging baskets are the most popular item for public sales. White petunias are ever popular.
Rows of bedding plants fresh from the greenhouse were sorted into customers' pre-orders at the Community Center. A wide variety of colorful bedding plants were arranged for public sale on tables in the shopping center parking lot.
Dozens of customer pre-orders were sorted and arranged on the floor at the Community Center. The troop's public sale stand in the shopping center parking lot early on Sunday morning.
Scouts assisted a customer on Sunday morning. A Troop 868 scout holds plants as customers shop then carries their purchase to their car after they pay.
